Dean Spence spent twenty two years building custom, hand-crafted log homes prior to turning his focus to rustic furniture design and production in 1994.
Dean’s background studying at the B. Allen Mackie Log Building School in the 1970’s, earning Journeyman Carpenter certification in the 1980’s, and studying the work of numerous furniture builders in the 1990’s gives him a strong design foundation for both free-standing and built-in furnishing and fixtures. He builds many custom furniture pieces each year.
Dean markets his rustic artistry under the name of Kapristo Mountain Woodcraft, producing distinctive, quality rustic furniture, house wares and twig miniatures. His work features traditional joinery methods and birch bark mosaics, influenced by wood working traditions from geographic areas ranging from the Adirondacks of upstate New York, to the Canadian Rockies.
Dean teaches rustic furniture-building workshops annually in a dozen communities across North America. His woodcraft is sold via the internet and by stores in three provinces and five states.
